My vechicle is in motion and then all of a sudden the steering wheel locks,the car makes noises and i get an error on my dashboard that says steering wheel assist or power steering assit. While this is hapening, i am unable to move the steering wheel. It is locked. Very dangerous as i am driving and one day can cause an accident due to this malfunction. This has happened 4 times within the month.

2012 fusion with 62,000 miles. When stationary, it makes a sound when you turn the steering wheel just slightly either way. Mechanic says the electric rack and pinion is the problem and it sounds like this is a common issue. I don't think i should be having this issue at only 62,000 miles. This is a very expensive fix.
